Inland Valley Daily Bulletin: Kelly Kunsek’s work at Paivika is to help campers who have physical or developmental disabilities, experience the same joys and challenges of camp their non-disabled peers enjoy.
Campers can go on guided hikes, horseback riding, participate in talent shows, arts and crafts, campfires, and swimming.
“We have two registered nurses on the grounds 24/7, as well as a staff of 45,” Kunsek said. “The main goals here at camp are teaching social interaction and independence to campers 9 and older,” said Kunsek, camp director since 1995.
She heads the staff that puts the safety and well-being of campers first, teams up with her husband, Kenny Kunsek, facility manager. The couple and their 9-year-old daughter, Sydney, who helps campers with activities, live on the grounds year-round.
