The Oregonian: Organizers have finally landed a site for Oregon’s first outdoor field designed for athletes with disabilities.
A three-year search for the right location ended at Somerset West Park, a six-acre site north of U.S. 26 along Northwest 185th Avenue. The park is near bus lines and has room to add more handicapped parking spaces. The well-used spot already has tennis courts, a pool and a gazebo.
Extra upgrades to make the athletic field suited for kids and adults with disabilities bumped the total construction cost estimates to between $3.2 million and $4.4 million, according to district staff reports.
Early ideas for the park include a baseball field with brown paths and flat white bases. The dugout, restrooms, bleachers and team seating areas will be designed to accommodate people using wheelchairs, walkers and crutches.
